Student Activities Board presents the sparkling 1998 Best Picture, “Shakespeare in Love,” in Commons Lecture Hall tonight at 7 and 10 p.m. Lit fans, note well: Tom Stoppard (“Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead”) wrote the script.

If you’re still waiting for “Jonson in Love” or, heaven help us, “Lyly in Love,” try the Toronto Mass Choir/Calvin Gospel Choir joint concert at 8 p.m. in the FAC.

Off-campus: the third-annual Indigenous Peoples’ Art Auction opens tonight at Heartside Chapel, 545 Division, 6-9 p.m.

China ‘gets it done’ for 50th

On Oct. 1, the People’s Republic of China celebrated its 50th anniversary. Everyone expected the celebration to be large, but it still surprised all. As a Calvin student in China, Kristi Schaaf, described it, “When China wants something done, they have the ability to get it done.”

Thousands of flags and millions of flowers dotted the nation’s capital, Beijing. The celebration began with 50 massive guns firing in unison.
