A week at the Chimes Sports desk

WHOM TO WATCH

Phil Sikkenga, track and field. The sophomore set no fewer than three school records last week in the 100 and 200 meters and the 110 high hurdles. At Hope on Saturday Sikkenga smashed the school mark in the hurdles with a time of 14.25 seconds, the second-fastest in Division III this season. In addition to that automatic national qualifying time, Sikkenga grabbed a provisional qualifying time of 10.79 in the 100. The numbers by themselves don’t make world record holder Donovan Bailey seem that far away; he’s less than a second faster at 9.84.

NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP

Also making strides in its second year at Calvin is the women’s lacrosse team. The Knights debuted with a win over Western Michigan before dropping three games to DI opponents at a Purdue tournament last weekend. After a loss to Albion on Monday it’s off to Toledo for yet another tournament tomorrow. “The focus is definitely not on wins and losses for such a new team,” says co-captain Angela Braden of the 26-player squad. As for comparisons with the other game in town, the men’s team, she says, “It’s [more of] a game of finesse. You play the ball, not the person.”

THE OLD SWITCHEROO

A&E man Fil and I partly flex our versatility muscles and partly just fill a few gaps as we tread on new pages this week. While an edifying experience was had by all we gratefully return to more familiar space for our last issue next week.

CORRECTION

It’s not that Calvin throwing coach Norm Zylstra is disappointed to see Nate Kuipers rewrite his name in the record books, but we sure didn’t help any by calling both “Nate” in our article this week. Some things just aren’t meant to be “revolutionized.” Our fault.

Shaq-O-Meter

LA Times’ real-time ticker calculates Shaq’s accumulating salary and offers a comparison with your own. It’s frustrating, particularly if your annual earnings are as paltry as Shaq’s free throw percentage.
