A NATIONAL TRAGEDY HITS HOME FOR SOME STUDENTS
When Freshman Ryan DeKruif wears his “Littleton Lionfish” tee shirt at Calvin, usually nobody says anything. When he wore it this Wednesday, people noticed.

On Tuesday, two armed students at a high school in DeKruif’s hometown went on a shooting rampage that left 15 people dead and wounded another 28.

The tragedy has put the entire nation, including Calvin’s campus, into a state of shock. It has hit the Calvin students from the Denver area especially hard...

COMMUNITY RESPONDS TO CHRISTIAN SCHOOL REQUIREMENT FOR PROFESSORS
This is the third in a four-part series on faculty requirements, focusing on the requirement that says professors must send their children to Christian schools. This week’s installment is a collection of statements made to Chimes about the requirement. Many are in response to the question: Does this requirement affect the “Reformed-ness” of this institution? We have decided to stray from the typical news format to give professors and administrators a forum to express more complete ideas. Next week’s story will focus on the future of faculty requirements at Calvin.

... This requirement is absolutely not necessary for Calvin to maintain its reformed character. This is one of those external issues of the sort Jesus talked about with the Pharisees when he was comparing their outside appearance to the reality inside. The relationship is very tenuous, and Calvin should pay attention to what’s inside, not on outward appearances. We need to pay very close attention to how faculty are teaching and what kind of research they are doing, and we need to jealously guard the reformed character of this institution. For all those students looking for a quiet place to study on Sundays, one is now being provided.

Every Sunday from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. for the next four weeks, Johnnys and the Cave (the Fish House) will be open to students seeking a place to study, although the food services themselves will not be open. The first-floor ITC computer lab will also be open at the same time for these four weeks...
