A survey conducted by WCAL in March gives some insight into radio listening habits of Calvin students. Of the 479 students surveyed, 231 or 49% of the students indicated that they regularly tuned in at least once a week. Of those who do not listen, 75 students stated that they do not like the idea of radio in general, while only 20 indicated that they prefer to listen to other Grand Rapids radio stations. 74 students stated that they do not have enough time to listen to WCAL as much as they would like. Only 11% of respondents do not listen because they dislike the music played on WCAL, while those who listen to WCAL the most, stated that they appreciate the eclectic variety and free-format of the station which features many artists not often heard on other stations. 26% of students prefer “alternative” music compared to 16% who prefer hard rock or metal, and 15% who listen to “Christian.” Other genres include: Classic Rock-13%, Pop and light rock-13% and Country-11%. Students listed hundreds of artists as their favorite including Michael W. Smith, Vanilla Ice, and Marilyn Manson. The top 25 of Calvin’s favorite artists will be counted down on WCAL next Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m.
