Afman to leave Calvin sidelines

The brightest era in Calvin women’s basektball history comes to an end at the conclusion of this season.

It’s on hold, at least.

Head coach Gregg Afman announced this week he will take a two year leave-of-absence to accept a position at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California.

Afman, 119-32 in five years as women’s basketball head coach, is the winningest coach in program history. His basketball teams won four league titles, and his women’s track teams won nine.

Afman leaves to become women’s head basketball coach and physical education professor at Westmont, whose women’s team began play this year.

Kim Gall, women’s tennis coach and physical education professor, will coach the basketball team during Afman’s absence.

As a Calvin student Afman was a member of four MIAA champion basketball teams and earned All-American honors in the javelin.

“Westmont is offering me an opportunity to develop an exercise physiology program and laboratory and a women’s basketball program that is currently in its first year,” he said.

“I am thankful to Calvin for giving me the opportunity to grow professionally as an educator and a coach.”
