Calvin remembers Professor Etter On Sunday, April 18, 2004, around 2 a.m., Calvin College lost a valued professor and dear friend when Terry Etter, Professor of economics and business, succumbed to cancer after a 13-month battle. Etter had been a member of the Calvin community for the past four years, contributing to Christian academics by drawing from his background in business as well as his intense love for Jesus Christ. Knights take off running Calvin’s track and field team members wowed the nation in last week’s meet at the Hillsdale College “Gina” Relays. There were many phenomenal races and individual performances, many concluding with nationally accredited results. Senior Matt Edwards, crediting his outstanding finish to God, ran a tremendous 10,000 meter race in 29:48 which placed him as one of the fastest 10,000 meter runners in the nation. Other impressive performances from the Calvin men that day include Andy Yazzie in the steeplechase with a 4th place time of 9:07.72. There were also a large number of outstanding performances from the women’s competition: high jumper Katie Bolt finished in 5th place with a jump of 1.630 meters; Lisa Nanninga finished 4th in shot-put with throw of 13.480 meters; Laura Hamilton with a 4th place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.00; Sarah Hastings in the steeplechase competition with a time of 10:57.78 earning her a 4th place title; discus thrower Katie Corner finished 2nd with a 48.580 meter toss; Missy Smith with a pole vault of 3.510 meters earning her a 3rd place finish; 200 meter dash runner Susan Abbring finished 2nd with a time of 24.54 and the 4x400 meter team finishing 4th with a time of 3:55.76. Overall, the Knights’ performances will go down in the record books as being the best Calvin has seen in years. The season is far from over and there are high hopes for similar results in later competitions. [ read more ]
Blending faith and politics Foreign language professors are not the only ones promoting a second language. Last Monday, April 26, Dr. Robert Edgar spoke on “The State of the World as Seen Through the Eyes of the Church” for the Eighth Annual Paul B. Henry Lecture in the Gezon Auditorium, and encouraged that the audience adopt a second language of “blending faith and political activities.” The Paul Henry Institute, named after a late distinguished politician and former Calvin professor, was created for the Study of Christianity and Politics in 1997.
