Unique teaching opportunities on mission front What image is evoked in your mind when I write the word “missionary?” Perhaps it is a picture of an oddly-dressed martyr-type character with a suitcase in one hand and a Bible clutched in the other trudging off to save the “natives” in a far and distant land. Those who are well acquainted with the world of modern missions scoff at this stereotypical depiction of people who are, for the most part, very normal human beings. So normal, in fact, that they deal with all the realities of life, including finding ways to see the Super Bowl every year from the other side of the world and, on a more serious note, providing for the needs of the family. JURIED ART SHOW “I like history and art,” said Saugutuck Middle School 7th grader Aaron Parach, showing just how important the Arts are to some students. Parach and many other students in grades ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade gathered at Calvin’s Fine Arts Center to enjoy the work of fellow students. The annual Michigan Arts Education Association (MAEA) district nine K-12 juried art show was held this past Saturday. On Tuesday, numerous parents, student-artists and teachers gathered to view the pieces that were selected to be displayed at the regional show. [ read more ]
Got Grand Rapids sports? According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the bustling metropolis of Grand Rapids has reached the population plateau of 200,000. This growing city, which serves as a hub for Michigan’s West Coast, is not only growing in numbers, but in reputation as well. It is this reputation that has brought a handful of minor league sports teams to Grand Rapids in recent years. While we, the citizens of Grand Rapids, may not be quick to acknowledge that we hail from the same city as some of these teams, it appears as if they are here for good … well, a few of them, at least. Hope defeats Calvin 75-64 In a 75-64 victory, Hope College walked into the Fieldhouse on Wednesday night and left with a win, eliminating Calvin from MIAA title contention. Hope’s MIAA record now stands at 9-2 and 20-4 overall, with the Knights trailing with 8-4 in MIAA play and 15-9 on the season. [ read more ]
