... on faithfulness I’ll admit it: I’m a perfectionist of sorts. The thought of failing – of even being less than perfect – horrifies me. How quickly I get a sinking feeling in my stomach when, despite my best efforts, my sermon is a dud, when my speech doesn’t measure up to everyone’s expectations, or when my teaching gets less than rave reviews from every student in every class. When that happens, people like me can quickly be seized by the demonic “tyranny of the oughts,” as Karen Horney once put it: “I ought to try harder,” “I should have prepared better;” “I must do better next time.” Hard drivers toward high success – people like me – have a tough time of it on the way. Suicide bombing in Moscow subway Last Friday a bomb exploded in a Moscow subway during the morning rush hour, killing 39. A suicide attack is suspected. The blast, which also injured 200 people, occurred on a train heading toward the city center. [ read more ]
Knightsicles take plunge Last week Thursday, over 120 Calvin students took an icy plunge into the pristine waters of the Calvin Seminary Pond. The catch? The pond was covered in eight inches of ice and the students had to walk through many inches of snow to get to the pond.
