Calvin adds new Multicultural Dean to roster
Calvin will have yet another Dean position on its staff come January, pending final approval of the Board of Trustees. The new Dean for Multicultural Affairs position has actually been open for two years as the college sought to find a suitable person for the job. After a national search, Dr. Barbara Omolade recently accepted the position, according to Provost Joel Carpenter. Omolade, who has already been approved by the search committee and the Provost, needs to be ratified by the Board. At that time the college will officially announce her appointment to the new position.

Woodlawn approves new ministry center
Woodlawn Christian Reformed Church – the church that holds Sunday services in the Calvin College Chapel – voted overwhelmingly to approve an expansion plan for the church to build a permanent ‘ministry center’ on college land across Burton Street. Woodlawn’s connection with Calvin stretches back over 30 years. When the college constructed the Chapel, Woodlawn made a multi-hundred thousand dollar contribution to the Chapel’s construction, under an agreement that Woodlawn would have significant access to the Chapel’s facilities, particularly the Chapel Undercroft.

Calvin focuses on faculty retention
During a walk through the hallways of campus on any given school day, one can observe in virtually every classroom a professor with a Ph.D. at the front of the classroom teaching their students. Calvin’s teaching faculty do this job alongside their own academic interests and research. Calvin professors represent a unique and powerful force of active scholars who are actively engaged in the education of undergraduate students. But amidst a renewed flurry for Christian scholars to engage in aspects of the academy, the college is finding a consistent but worthy challenge in retaining the scholars that it has.
