Student Senate passes anti-war resolution
Campus has been abuzz this week in the wake of the Student Senate passing a resolution against a potential U.S. war in Iraq last week Thursday. Students, faculty and administrators have expressed passionate views on the resolution, which some say is unprecedented and out of Senate’s bounds. Others, however, have pointed to a similar Senate resolution passed in 1969 that denounced U.S. participation in the war in Vietnam.

Rangeela 2003: a festival of music, dancing, and culture

They sang. They danced. They did it their way. The international students once again blew away the predominantly white population of Calvin College with fantastic performances in Rangeela 2003. Taking its name from a Hindi word meaning “colorful,” this event was started eight years ago by an Egyptian student whose vision was to share the astounding diversity of world cultures with her fellow students. Two hundred fifty-five students, coming together from 55 countries in Africa, East Asia, India and Latin America, painted a collage of vibrant colors on the stage of the FAC.

Student siblings come to campus
More than 270 siblings (269 registered and many others not) invaded Calvin’s campus last weekend. Most came to see what life was like for their brother or sister, a few came to visit an aunt or an uncle or a cousin, but all had a great time living a not-so-college life. Nearly everything on campus was geared up for Siblings Weekend. Dorms came up with children’s activities and Calvin provided games and crafts. Even the dining halls altered their menus and activities to suit the taste of the kids here on campus.

Faculty begin sexual harassment awareness training
Last summer Calvin instituted mandatory Sexual Harassment Awareness Training (SHAT) for all faculty and staff members. The reason for this new training session rises out of “a growing awareness that this is an area in which colleges and institutions can be vulnerable,” said Heidi Rienstra, executive assistant in Calvin’s Office of the Provost. “All of what we do [at the college] depends on relationships,” said Rienstra, so from a “wisdom standpoint” the new sessions are a step toward better relationships.
