Hauerwas brings Bonhoeffer to lecture, post-lecture questions spark debate
Stanley Hauerwas and Dietrich Bonhoeffer admittedly aren’t household names for most families. But when the former well-known theologian came to Calvin College to comment on the latter well-known one, many people stood in line to hear him speak. Hauerwas is the Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at the Divinity School of Duke University. It focused on a newcomer to the group and her spiritual experiences that set her apart from the rest and caused them to question their beliefs.

One purpose of the Byker Chair is to take three disciplines of studies, political science, sociology and economics, and develop these areas in the college. Provost Joel Carpenter, head of the search committee, said that choosing these academic disciplines is “strategic for the college.” “We are working really hard to get stronger [in these disciplines] right now,” he said.
