Editorial Note
Following several recent editorial pieces written by Editor in chief Erin Miller, Chimes has learned that at least a few students readers are confused about the nature of an editorial. First, Chimes editorials always appear on the page with the masthead (also called the staff box) and the letters. These are written only by Chimes editors. All other opinion pieces are on the Perspectives pages or are submitted in the form of a letter. Second, editorials are opinion pieces, written from a specific point of view. It follows, then, that an editorial will be one-sided. Third, several students have brought concerns that the student newspaper is not the forum for bringing up problems with individual student organizations or with campus offices. To the contrary, Chimes believes that one of its most important jobs is to function as a forum for all students. Groups or offices mentioned in these pieces should not feel targeted, but rather take the criticism seriously and consider whether or not changes are needed.
