Republicans gain control of Congress
Republicans emerged as the overall victors in Tuesday’s midterm elections. The GOP gained control of the Senate, increased their majority in the House and still hold more governor seats than the Democrats. Much of their success was credited to Bush, who visited many of the states numerous times where such hotly contested races had developed. The president’s party usually loses seats in midterm elections, but Republicans believe that Bush’s popularity helped to bring his fellow party members to power.

Theatre Company presents 'A Doll House'
The Calvin Theatre Company, opened its 2002-2003 play season with the production of Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll House.” Ibsen utilizes a structure common to that of classical Greek theatre, but does so with psychological insight that reflects his own position in theatre history. The play is considered to be the first in the genre of Realism, which valued real portrayal of life. “A Doll House” is set in Norway, and was written in 1879. The plot unfolds around Ibsen’s heroine, Nora (played by junior Aileen May).

Women's volleyball wins first round of tourney
In light of last week’s “Reformation Day,” Calvin’s varsity volleyball team carried the spirit of Martin Luther with his posting of the 95 Theses and his challenge to the Catholic Church of the late Middle Ages onto the court in their victory over St. Mary’s. While theology students debate the results of who gained from the Reformation and whether it accomplished what Luther intended that Oct. 31st back in 1517, there’s no debating the lady Knights’ triumph over the Belles.

'Light in the Night' draws 500 children
Harry Potter, Bob the Builder and Al Gore were spotted at the Knollcrest East apartments last Thursday night. They weren’t there to play Quidditch, dig up dirt or give a campaign speech. Instead, they joined approximately 800 people, including about 500 children ages 2-12, to get candy and play carnival-style games as part of the eighth annual “Light in the Night” Halloween celebration. “Light in the Night was started in 1995 by Dan DeVries who was the KE Resident Director at that time,” said Knollcrest East Department Assistant Vicki Nolan.
