East Campus christened
Calvin students, parents, faculty, alumni and guests marked a historic moment last Friday by celebrating the official completion of the buildings across the East Beltline. The dedication service was planned during Parents’ Weekend for the building project titled, “Stepping East By God’s Grace.” This project included the building of the Calvin’s Crossing, a 380-foot overpass across the East Beltline, DeVos Communication Center, a state-of-the-art communications building and the Prince Conference Center, a tranquil hospitality center. The dedication activities were conveniently planned on the Parents Weekend to accommodate more parents, and also because the Board of Trustees had their meeting for the weekend.

Science Fair lets students show off work
Every year, parents visit Calvin College during Parents’ Weekend to see the many things the college has to offer to students and parents. They can actually experience dorm life, the Fall Music Festival, the cafeteria food and the various programs that students are part of. One of the academic programs parents could see last Friday was the Science Fair, presented by the Science Division. The Science Division has eight different departments such as biology, chemistry and physics. Annually, all of these departments get together and organize a Science Fair. During the summer, students are invited to be involved in a research project with a specific professor.

Israeli government collapses
Israel’s coalition government collapsed on Wednesday when negotiations failed between Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s Likud Party and the Labor Party. Defense Minister and Labor Party leader Benjamin Ben-Eliezer and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres resigned from their positions after a three-hour conference with Sharon did not resolve a dispute concerning the state budget. Sharon has blamed Ben-Eliezer and the Labor Party for the division. “The whole world knows the importance that I place on a national unity government,” Sharon said according to the BBC. Peres meanwhile announced that all Labor Party members would be handing in resignation letters as well. The debate centers on where $150 million should be allocated. It was originally planned to go to Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza. Ben-Eliezer threatened to quit if the funds were not directed toward social spending and the creation of jobs.
