Calvin defeated Albion College in an intense first-round match of the MIAA Tournament on Tuesday night. After splitting matches with the Britons over the season, Calvin rose to the top, holding a 30-18, 30-23, 30-22 win over Albion on their home court. Albion scored the first point of game one but would never lead again the rest of the match. The Knights gained early momentum, jumping out to a 19-4 lead in game one behind a strong blocking attack up front, and they also took early leads in game two and three. Head coach Jerry Bergsma expected a tough match.

``Albion's upperclassmen are used to playing tough matches in the MIAA Tournament so the team wasn't phased by the level of competition,'' said Bergsma. ``We knew they would be prepared.''

The Brits played hard, but the Knights were ready for their offensive tactics. ``They have a strong middle attack and tough outside hitters,'' Bergsma said of Albion's front line. ``We knew we had to beat them in the middle.'' The Lady Knights did just that, dominating at the net with a sturdy block. Despite collecting only four service aces, the Knights used accurate serving to keep Albion's offesive attack off-balance.

``Our defense was strong at the net and the front row was able to consistently get into position to close the block,'' stated Bergsma. Not only did the Knights effectively protect their court, but they also executed an aggressive attack on the Brits' defense. ``Offensively, we had a very balanced attack,'' confirmed Bergsma. ``There were contributions made by the whole team.''

After a powerful first game, it was obvious that the Knights were having fun. Fueled by their optimistic attitudes, they came together to show Albion what they considered ``having a good time.'' Freshman middle hitter Kara Kuipers played an strong role in Tuesday's match with 10 kills and seven blocks. Junior outside hitter Cassie Christopher and middle hitter Melissa Pell pounded seven kills each. Senior setter Sara Ahrenholz had outstanding hustle, setting her hitters up with 43 assists and totaling 15 digs on defense. Sophomore Trisha Balkema also added 15 digs while Christopher collected 14 digs. Albion failed to shake Calvin's defense as the Knights refused to let a ball touch the floor. The Brits attempted a comeback, but the Knights shut them down with a powerful front line. The hitters had great control, finding the holes on Albion's court. ``When we block and serve like we did tonight, we're a much better team,'' said Bergsma. ``We'll need to continue to do the same thing on Friday in order to stay alive in this tournament.''

Senior setter Sara Ahrenholz thought the team not only improved its game, but it also displayed a strong sense of team unity.

``We blocked really well and our serving was pretty tough,'' said Ahrenholz. ``Our team chemistry was great and I think everyone was more excited to play.'' Junior outside hitter Cassie Christopher also commended the team on its ability to come together for the victory. ``We worked more as a team and we had fun,'' said Christopher.

The Knights know what it takes to win--teamwork and having fun. They have a difficult task ahead, but the Knights have no doubts that they can win an MIAA championship title. After tonight's match, it is clear that the team is determined to go all the way.

``It's win or the season's over--Albion got us earlier in the season, but we were ready to prove to the league that we could do it,'' said junior defensive specialist and setter Laura Tucker.

``If we keep playing this well together we can win it,'' added Ahrenholz. Calvin will return to action against Alma in Friday's semifinal match.
