The Calvin college women's soccer team used Tricia Dyk's third hat trick of the season to shut out Olivet 7-0 in front of a large crowd Wednesday afternoon. The Knights were coming off a two-game losing streak, having dropped games to MIAA-leaders Kalamazoo and Albion in the last week.
It took the Knights until the 31st minute of play to score, but that opened the floodgates. Junior Lindy Van Haitsma's goal in the 31 st minute was followed closely by a goal from Dana Haan, both coming off assists by Tricia Dyk. After her two assists, Dyk `went off' on a tear that lasted only 22 minutes, but resulted in three goals, and a 5-0 lead for Calvin. If you are doing the math at home two points for a goal and one for an assist, that is eight points (3 goals, 2 assists) in only 26 minutes, a superb performance that lifted Tricia to third place on the all-time goals scored list for Calvin. In an era of projected totals due to home run race in major league baseball, the Calvin College Chimes projects that Tricia Dyk will finish the season with 27 goals. Dyk's current tally is 16 goals with eight games left to play.
``We just went out there after a very bad last week, loosing to Albion and Kalamazoo, and tried to focus on winning one at a time,'' commented Dyk. ``We knew that Olivet was a good team, having only given up three goals in league play, and we shut them down.''
The Knights really did shut down the Comets, shutting out Olivet's Laura Fiorino and Doris Sullivan who are the number six and eight scorers in the league. ``We put Tara Bergsma on Doris and she stuck on her all day, Tara really did a good job of marking her,'' added Dyk. ``It seemed like as soon as their sweeper went out of the game with an injury, we were able to dominate the flow of the game.''
Calvin received two second half goals from sophomore striker Becky Welsh, as she deposited passes from Sarah Derrico and Colleen Ford to the back of the net, for their second and third goals of the season. ``We did a very good job at controlling the ball and the tempo of the game,'' noted Welsh. ``We also did a good job switching the fields and making good runs''
Head coach Mark Recker agreed. ``We really tried to focus on execution in practice, working on one-touch and two-touch passes, and I think we did a good job of that today.'' He also added, ``I think today was a good example of Calvin soccer pride, no matter what the score the girls still wanted to put the ball in the back of the net.''
