For the third year in a row, small loops of violet ribbon have made their way to the collars and lapels of members of the Calvin community. With the ribbon comes a promise: “I promise to love and respect my gay and lesbian brothers and sisters and to pray for their protection.”

About 20 years ago, a new term was introduced into English parlance. The term was “climate study” and its introduction in some ways defined the profundity of social change in the 20th century.

A climate study is an attempt to gauge the temperament of an organization or institution. Often, such a study is conducted using research instruments like surveys, focus groups and interviews. Researchers delve into the character of relationships, issues and conflicts, and seek to pinpoint areas of friction and division. The objective is to give a report on how friendly an organization’s environment is for its inhabitants.

Calvin’s expansion and renovation project is well on its way, as evidenced by the loss of one parking lot to make way for bulldozers and the implementation of a new parking policy.

Before spring break, dorm residents with cars parked in the soccer lot across the East Beltline were asked to relocate their cars to make way for construction vehicles. To accommodate for the loss of space, the parking lot by the ecosystem preserve was reopened.
