Airband 2001 rocked the Fieldhouse Friday night in a spectacular show of dance, song and video comedy.

Playing to the packed auditorium, the group “The Smooth Criminals” stole the show, winning both the People’s Choice Award and the 1st place prize from the Airband judges for their performance.

This year’s show was also a pleasant turnaround from last year’s controversy over judging and the disruptive behavior by the audience. Slight changes in judging procedure led to the declaring of a winner whom most in the stands felt was clearly deserving of the title.

Freshmen Summer Smith and Carrie Jipping came to school last September with a two-part mission.

The first objective: get a bunch of people together who are not afflicted by Dutch arrhythmia. Second: twist and jive in unison to a tune in front of a crowd at a sporting event.

Those objectives – and a year-long dream – were fulfilled for the two this Wednesday night at the Calvin-Adrian men’s basketball game. There, the Fieldhouse hosted the inaugural performance of the nine women and two men of Calvin Cheer.

Some major changes are on their way to Calvin College. After months of examination and consultation, Calvin will begin metamorphosing its “image” and changing how the college is seen by the external world.

The new approach and style will be designed and implemented jointly by the admissions department, the alumni and public relations office, and external consulting firms, but will ultimately involve nearly every part of the college.
