Rev. Hulst installed
Rescheduled ceremony finally takes place

Rev. Mary S. Hulst was officially installed this last Wednesday as the first female chaplain of Calvin College, though she is only the third person to fill what is a surprisingly young position on campus.

Hulst attended Calvin College for a bachelor’s degree in classical studies and later received her Master of Divinity from Calvin Theological Seminary.

Three years ago, she returned to Calvin to teach in the communication arts and sciences department for one year, before moving on to teach for two years at Calvin Theological Seminary, where she currently holds a teaching position, along with the title of assistant professor of preaching.

The chaplain position only started 47 years ago, when, with the opening of the Knollcrest campus, Reverend Bernard Pekelder developed Calvin’s chaplaincy program and became the first Calvin College chaplain in 1962.

You can never say never. After what was thought to be a done season for the Knights, Calvin was given a second chance and an at-large bid to the big dance. Victory is sweet, which was exactly the case for Calvin this past weekend as the Knights eliminated Washington and Jefferson on Friday and Wittenberg Saturday with a combined score of 5-0. With the pair of victories, Calvin has survived to its first Sweet 16 since 2006.

The match-up between Calvin and Washington and Jefferson was the first-ever meeting between the two schools, and they did battle on Friday here at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
