Newsom kicks off tour at Calvin
California singer, opening act Bowerbirds light up Chapel with performances

Joanna Newsom, heralded as one of “indie music’s leading lights” by The New York Times, graced the Calvin College Chapel with her presence Friday, March 12. The sold-out show was the first stop on her tour to promote her latest album, the 18-song, three-disc LP “Have One on Me,” released on Feb. 23.

To these reviewers, the night was in fact a double feature, with two great bands for the price of one. Beginning with Bowerbirds and concluding with Joanna Newsom, the concert last Friday was not only a deal but delightful to our ears, and a show that we would have been sorry to miss.

Incendiary is the only word that comes to my mind when thinking about Bowerbirds’ second concert of their tour, here at Calvin last Friday. The full 45-minute set, filled with an array of instruments and beautiful, mesmerizing voices, was transporting as Bowerbirds sang illusively earnest songs about animals, love and their pro-Earth views.

In recent weeks, the buzz has been growing over the push to bring Google’s latest project, Google Fiber, to Grand Rapids. The word is out about Google Fiber and between the social media networks and word-of-mouth, it has become a topic of constant conversation. In fact, since Google announced its plans for Fiber, a steering committee has formed in Grand Rapids, with the sole goal of bringing the technology here first.

Track makes most of opportunities
Three Knights compete in championships; Boerner wins individual title

At a successful weekend at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, history was made by one particular Knight.

Junior Rachel Boerner was crowned NCAA champion after winning the 400-meter dash in a time of 55.95. Boerner became the first indoor national champion that Calvin has ever had. She and junior shot-putter Sarah Reasoner were the only two Calvin women competing at the meet, yet they managed to propel the women to an 11th place finish in the overall team ...
